BULGARIAN CLIMATE

28
Jan 2010

In a general way, Bulgaria is equipped with a climate of the moderate type.

The country can be divided into two distinct climatic zones besides, the mountain of Stara Planina playing the part of line of demarcation.

Located at the same latitude as the south of France, Bulgaria is a country of mountains. The chain of Rhodopes, in the south of the country, green like the Massif Central, forms a geographical and climatic barrier with Greece. However, the hot air of the Aegean Sea goes up there in spring and in summer, mixing with the fresh air with the mountains. But the Mediterranean influence stops there. The remainder of the country knows a climate of the rather continental type: the summers are hot and dry, especially in plain (with some storms and rains in evening); on the other hand, the winters are cold and snow-covered, with frequent snowfalls in mountain until May.

The balneal season, on the coasts of the Black Sea (400 km on the whole), goes from June to the end of September: good weather (on average 27 °C), the temperature of water is of 23 °C. The nights are agreeably fresh, and the storms can be frequent.

WINTER : from November to April :

The North of Bulgaria is the coldest place, the climate being much softer in the South. The temperatures lie between 7° and 0°C in winter. And, but that very seldom, the temperatures can also fall until - 20°C and specific heavy snowfalls during the winter months can also happen.

SPRING : from May to June :

In spring the climate is typically continental and enough variable. It is favourable with the fruit trees and especially with the flowering of the famous rose of Bulgaria which flowered from May 15th to June 15th by whole fields in the area of Kazanlak.

SUMMER : from June to September :

The climate in North of Bulgaria and especially along the Danube is hot and heavy during the season of summer. The South of Bulgaria, is marked by a Mediterranean influence and temperatures aren't so extreme as at the edges of the Danube and in Dobroudja. The temperatures lie between 28° and 30°C. In the towns of Ruce and Silistra, the temperatures can reach 35°C but that are registered very seldom.

FALL : from October and November :

The autumn is soft and pleasant. Forest diversity makes the landscapes splendid and multicoloured. In theory, the autumn causes more rains than in spring. The most rainy months are : May, October and of November.
