It is also called the Cathedral of the Assumption.

HISTORY OF THE CATHEDRAL OF THE ASSUMPTION

In the first years which followed the release of the country at the end of the 19th century, the Bulgarian orthodox population with Varna increased in a fast way. To confirm their close links with Russia, the orthodox faith and their desires to express their separation of the Greek Patriarchate, the orthodox Bulgarian ones of Varna, organized, for the first visit of the prince of Bulgaria, called Dondukov-Korsakov an official religious service in the church St Mikhaïl Archangel. The prince was however disappointed by the state of the temple and declared that the city deserved an imposing church, which would be single in its kind of share all the country. And he promised a financial help for that.

Soon, a committee was elected and the first task of all consisted in choosing the place of the future construction but also joining together the required funds for this ambitious project.

The financial aspect was regulated by way of gifts, lottery and a governmental loan. And almost half of the citizens of the city offered construction materials.

It took six years to the temple to be completed. The project imitated the style of the Peterhoff temple in Saint Petersburg. The church was to reach the size of 35 X 35 meters, with a basilica with three naves, the high altar dedicated to the Assumption, that of north - faithful to Prince Alexandre Nevski, street of the south - with Saint Nicolas's Day miracle-worker.

The icons and frescos of the temple were painted in the years following 1949; the glosses were also installed at this time there.

Located in full center of Varna, current Cathedral is one of the most famous buildings of the city. A religious temple for the citizens, impossible to circumvent for the tourists, the cathedral is one of the symbols of Varna.
