The area of Ruce counts two important monasteries including the rupestral monastery Saint Dimitar Bassarbovski called BASSARBOVO.
Located in the valley of Russelski (one of the three large rivers which are finished in the Danube), the monastery of Bassarbovo is built in rock cliffs and would date from the 12th century. The site is very beautiful: small flowered court, benches, trees…
Some steps are has to climb to be able to admire closely this Bulgarian historic building.
The name of the monastery comes from the monk Dimitar Bassarbovski who lived with the monastery and died there. The legend tells that after the flood of the valley by pouring rain, the body of the monk was carries but the place where was the body of Dimitar was indicated to the population by a blind young girl who would have known it of Dimitar even become a saint himself.
