Pobiti Kamani which means into Bulgarian “Stones on the ground” is a natural phenomenon of most extraordinary of Bulgaria.

This almost mythical place is at approximately 20km in the west of Varna. On a surface which extends on approximately 253ha draw up vertical rocks, left columns sometimes who can chief of work of nature cumulated to 6m height. This particular site is also named “the petrified forest”.

The zone of Pobiti Kamani is the first natural phenomenon having obtained the statute of protected area in Bulgaria, in 1937. The same ones go back to one 50-of million years, when these grounds belonged to marine resources. Progressively of the shrinking of water, erosion was implemented to carve these rocks and to give them unusual forms.

The rocks are separate in 7 principal groups. Thickest exceed 2m at the base. They consist of a mixture of limestone and sand and contain many fossils - shells, snails. The columns hollow, without strong foundation and are filled with sand.

Most popular are the rocks Dikilitachki, approximately 300 of number and at the same time most easily accessible. For the adventurers one can offer the visit of the Career, on a more difficult route. The forces of nature carved fantastic forms, such of animals, silhouettes, of fixed water falls…

Certain columns are due as by miracle - 2 cones to back, in a fragile balance and yet! The site shelters rare species of low vegetation and trees. The landscape, at first sight desert, is inhabited by 21 species of birds, 7 species of reptiles and 7 species of mammals. Excavations on the site revealed the presence of dwellings of paleolithic and let think that the rocks endorsed a crowned role.
